SAMPLE OUTREACH PROJECT:

Drypoint, Etching & Chine Colle

Studio 8: Irish Museum of Modern Art

This workshop was aimed at 15-18 year olds. Participants created an original print through the medium of drypoint, etching and chine colle. Chine colle roughly translates from French, chine = tissue and collé meaning glue or paste. "Chine" because the thin paper traditionally used in the process was imported to Europe from China, India and/or Japan.

Participants created their images on perspex (acetate), copper and aluminium using drypoint and etching processes of making incisions on the surface of plates, experimenting with a good variety of materials used in professional print studios. A whole range of tools was available such as roulettes, drypoints of differents types, burin and rockers.

The printing process included not only the usual etching paper but also a lightweight paper (as the Asian papers are referred to). This paper (usually colorful, texturized and of the same size of the plate) is placed between the plate and the etching paper resulting in a beautiful and accomplished chine colle.

No previous experience or skills was required as artist and mediators provided full assistance throughout the activity.
